Making a wood box
The turning of a box is a rather simple artisan process, it starts from a wooden parallelepiped or a branch or a small trunk. The limited dimensions of a box allow for considerable flexibility in the choice of wood; knots and undulations of the grain add beauty to the turned pieces.
The piece of wood is roughed and then fixed to a mandrel to dig the box from the head.
From the same piece of wood, the lid is cut and shaped with continuity of grain, in other cases another type of wood in contrasting color is used for the lid. The lid is generally fixed with the hollow edge inside the box, often to complete the turning of the lid it fits into the box and turns everything together. The lid must be easily lifted, and this is achieved in various ways, by making it protrude from the body of the box, by creating a groove in the profile, or by inserting a knob in the center. The knob, when not turned together with the wood with which the lid is made, is turned separately with different wood and then inserted and glued into a hole made in the center of the lid. In the end, once the external profile has been turned, the inside of the box hollowed out, and the lid is created, the box is finished and the base is cut.
