Wood turned jewelry boxes are made as single pieces or sets of caskets. Turned by hand using various woods, with or without knobs on the lid, created seeking linear shapes and clean curves. They are objects to be kept on display for their chromatic mellow notes, nevertheless they are also functional as object holders or jewelry boxes.
Turned wooden boxes can be both ornamental and functional and are pleasant to hold and use. They can be employed to store jewelry or other small items.
Turned wooden boxes can have so many uses and make great gifts. Boxes can be made to order to hold a treasured piece of jewelry or keepsake.
In most cases the jewelry boxes have a flattened shape and, for their creation, thick wooden planks turned transversely to the vein, can be used. In other cases where the shape is more elongated, the wood is turned longitudinally. The turning technique, for both the body and the lid, is very similar to that of a bowl or plate. It starts from a board sawn to form a circle. The board is fixed to a faceplate with screws, installed on the lathe, and the base is turned with a socket for the lathe chuck. The partially turned piece is unscrewed from the faceplate and overturned fixing the base to the chuck of the lathe. At this point, the piece is hollowed by eliminating all the screws marks, designing the profile, and finishing the housing for the lid. Creating the lid is a similar process to that of the box, the lower part of the lid is turned first, creating a socket for the chuck and creating the step that will fix the lid to the box. The lid is reversed, and the upper part of the lid is turned producing a small hole in the center to glue the knob. The knob is created by turning a minute piece of wood, almost always in chromatic contrast with the box, the knob is then glued to the lid.
