Handcrafted wooden plates
Wood plates in walnut, olive, cedar, cherry, the wooden plate is a very decorative item, the cross-grain turning of the wood, with excavations at low inclinations, generates striking effects.
How artisanal wood plates are realized
The wooden plates are prepared from a board. A square segment is sectioned from the board and an initial shape is created by removing the edges with a saw and approximating a circular object that will be fixed to the lathe to be machined.
The circular board is attached to the lathe by affixing it to a wooden disc, or "sacrificial disk", fixed with screws to a faceplate. The faceplate is then screwed to the lathe head.
In this way, the external profile of the plate and the base are shaped. A bowl gouge is used, this type of chisel is used to cut the grain of the wood transversely. The gouge must be extremely sharp, or when cutting against the grain, the fibers of the wood will tear. Once the external profile has been completed, the base of the plate is flattened and a shallow circular hollow in the center is created with a chisel. The hollow will be used to center the plate when you go excavating the concave surface.
The plate is then detached and turned over, gluing the plate again to the wooden sacrificial board on which a thin male joint has been produced to be able to center the plate.
The concave part of the plate is then excavated until the desired shape and thickness are reached.
The plate is sanded with increasingly thin abrasive paper, completed with natural waxes, and then unglued from the wooden board.
