Wooden mortars and pestles

Hand-turned wooden mortar and pestle

Handcrafted mortars in resistant woods such as English oak and ash are functional objects that, thanks to their design, become furnishing accessories in the kitchen. The pestles are turned with distinctive and always different shapes while maintaining good support for the palm.
The mortar has been in use for thousands of years. Used for the preparation of food, for the kitchen, pharmacy, chemistry, whenever there is the need to shred materials or foods that will then be used crumbled or pulverized.
It was one of the first objects built by humans to work food; starting from a concave boulder and a stone for grinding, which then evolved into millstones and mortars. The mortar and pestle can be made with a broad variety of materials such as wood, stone, ceramic. It is an object present in almost all kitchens that for simplicity and beauty competes with the appliances of today.
Here you will find wooden mortars and pestles to grind small quantities of dry food. The wooden mortars of legnochegira are handmade in hardwoods and are particularly original and aesthetically elegant. The outside of the mortar is finished with natural waxes, while the inside and the pestle are left natural.

Woodturning the mortar

The turning of the mortar is very similar to that of the plates. It can be carried out longitudinally or cross-grain. The base and the external profile are made first, then the base is glued to a "sacrificial piece" and the inside is excavated, leaving the walls and the base rather thick. The exterior only is finished with oil or wax.

Woodturning the pestle

It starts from a cylinder or a parallelepiped; which is shaped along the vein with a spindle gauge taking care to give curvature to the heads similar to the internal surface of the mortar.
