A wooden fruit bowl or salad bowl is generally hand-made starting from a wooden board, which thickness will determine the bowl depth. From the board, a square segment is cut and a bowl blank is created by removing the excess corners with a saw and approximating a circular shape, a low cylinder, to be attached to the lathe and start turning. The bowl blank is attached to the lathe with a faceplate. The faceplate is secured with screws to the wood surface and then installed into the lathe headstock. This is probably the most secure way to mount wood bowl blanks.
The first step is to shape the external profile and base of the fruit bowl. A bowl gauge chisel is utilized to cut the wood cross grain. The chisel need to be very sharp or when cutting cross grain will rip the wood fibers. Once the external profile is completed, the base of the bowl is smoothed and a mortise for the chuck jaws is cut with a parting tool in the base of the bowl.
The faceplate is unscrewed, the bowl reversed and the chuck tightened to the mortise expanding the jaws.
The hollow part is now cut getting rid also of the marks of the faceplate screws until the desired shape and thickness are reached.
The bowl is smoothed with thinner and thinner sandpaper and then finished with natural waxes.
