Woodturned hand made bowls

Turned objects in a unique production, made in various types of wood. Even a ordinary object like a bowl or a pocket emptier can be surprisingly decorative, we offer the warm color of the cherry tree, the shades and strength of the ash, the tenacity, and the striking honey color of the mulberry with which deformed bowls are made.

An ancient artifact

The bowl is an artifact that has existed for thousands of years. Originally this object was dug with simple tools from different materials or molded from clay, to make cups used for storing and preparing food. Nowadays, wooden bowls are made with excellent definition and finishing through turning.

Simple wooden bowls
A simple bowl in turned wood shows the beauty of wood. It almost seems that there is no forcing and modification of the raw material in the creation of a bowl. The harmonic curves of a bowl give a simple elegance that incorporates the characteristics of the wood, bringing out its natural beauty.
Each wooden bowl created by legnochegira is made and finished by hand and each is unique. Some bowls are thin and delicate, and others are thicker and stronger. Wooden bowls are meant to be decorative, but can be used as useful food bowls or as storage.
The finishes implemented for the bowls are based on mixtures of natural waxes. A wax finish is suitable for both decorative use and as a food holder, but does not withstand washing.

Making a wood bowl

The wood turned bowls are made by hand starting from a wooden board. From the table a square segment is obtained which is roughened by removing the excess corners with a saw and approximating a circular shape, a low cylinder. The cylinder will be fixed to the lathe to be machined.
The piece is attached to the lathe with a faceplate. The faceplate is screwed to the wood surface and then screwed to the lathe head.
The first step in turning a bowl, is to shape the outer profile and base. To turn a gouge is used, this type of chisel is used to cut the grain of the wood transversely. The gouge must be very sharp or when cutting against the grain it will tear the fibers of the wood. Once the external profile has been completed, the base of the fruit bowl is smoothed and a mortise is carved with a chisel, for the jaws of the lathe chuck, at the base of the bowl.
The pad is unscrewed, the fruit bowl is overturned and the chuck is tightened on the mortise, expanding the jaws.
The concave part of the bowl is then excavated, also eliminating the signs of the screws on the pad, until the desired shape and thickness is reached.
The bowl is then smoothed with increasingly thin abrasive cloths and finished with mixtures of waxes or oil.
