The raised wooden fruit bowls are composed of three elements: the base, the stem, and the bowl, these three elements are turned separately and then assembled with glued joints.
The first element turned is the stem. In the case of a simple column, this is shaped longitudinally utilizing a spindle gouge and forming two male joints at the ends. In the cases where the stem is pierced, this is achieved with the inside out technique, which requires two turning phases, trapping, in some cases, an object between the first and second turning stage: generally a wooden sphere.
The second element is the bowl made with the same technique used to make the plates, with cross-grain turning. To begin with, the lower part of the bowl is turned, digging, in the middle, the joint for the stem, and then, turning the piece over to hollow the concave part.
The base of the raised bowl is then produced by first flattening the lower part creating a slot for the lathe spindle jaws, and then refining the upper part by digging again in the center a joint for the stem.
The three pieces are then assembled by gluing them and reassembling all on the lathe to maintain the pressure and alignment of the pieces until the glue sets.
The raised fruit bowl requires a rather complex turning work but the end result is an extremely elegant decorative wood product.
Being produced in three distinct pieces, the fruit bowls can be made by assembling different woods, creating contrasts of color and grain.
